Monster Energy’s Ricky Carmichael Wins San Francisco Round Of Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross
Carmichael outlasts Stewart & Reed in crash-laden race
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 29, 2007)
"They made it easier for me, that’s for sure," said an elated Carmichael from the podium. "I think I was the only one of the three of us that didn’t crash. I’ll take it any way I can get it."
Being a bit modest, Carmichael was actually on it all day and poised to make a run at his fellow Monster Energy-backed rival, Stewart - had Stewart not gone down in the rhythm section, then stalled his bike in the same section soon after. Carmichael’s best timed practice lap was tops out of anybody’s in the AMA Supercross class and his 15- plus second win in his heat race was the best there as well.
In the main event Carmichael played it cool, though he did have one feet-off-the-pegs recovery that supercross fans have come to expect over the years. All Carmichael had to say about that was: "Yeah, I must be living right to have saved that!."
With the win Carmichael moved up into 4th place overall in the Supercross class standings, despite missing the Anaheim 2 round during his abbreviated season.
Carmichael’s Monster Energy-backed Makita/Suzuki teammate Ivan Tedesco was running well early, finishing 2nd in his heat race behind Carmichael to make the main. Tedesco then started up front in the main and was running as high as 5th for the first half of the race before he went down in a slick corner and wound up settling for 14th.
As it stands Tedesco is still in the top ten overall with 42 points.
The next race on the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series schedule is this weekend at Anaheim

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto Wins Again In AMA SX Lites Class
Villopoto best at San Francisco round; now holds a convincing 26- point lead in overall Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series Western Lites Region
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 29, 2007)
2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series would be back at the Pro Circuit truck, winning Round Four of the series at San Francisco’s SBC Park in dominant, wire-to-wire fashion.
The emerging superstar from Poulsbo, Wash., had his A-game going from the time the bikes first hit the rain-soaked track for the first practice session, through the checkered flag at the end, topping the timed practice, winning his heat race and winning the main event with the fastest lap time there as well.
About the only thing Villopoto didn’t do was pull the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award, but Monster Energy-backed teammate Chris Gosselaar made sure that was brought back to the Pro Circuit/Kawasaki camp as well.
"I tried to get the best starts I could, ride as well as I can and ride my own race," said Villopoto, who notched is third win of the season. "I’d like to get enough points to win the title before Seattle (the final WSX Lites round)." As it stands Villopoto has a 26-point lead over Jason Lawrence for 1st place in the overall standings with three more WSX rounds (Anaheim 3, Houston and San
Diego) to go before taking an eight-week break during the Eastern SX Lites rounds.
As Villopoto stood atop the podium, things couldn’t have been worse for Gosselaar. After pulling the holeshot and leading the race, Gosselaar was in a great battle with Martin Davalos for 2nd behind Villopoto, when he lost the front end in a corner and went down
Next up for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team is Round Five of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series back at Anaheim’s Angels Stadium. San Francisco’s SBC Park (Jan. 27th).
Last year at Anaheim 3 Villopoto finished 7th overall in the Lites class.

Monster Energy Snowmobilers Rule Winter X!
Monster Energy-backed Tucker Hibbert (Snocross) and Chris Burandt (Snowmobile Freestyle) both take gold at Winter X Games 11
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 29, 2007) - Things couldn't have gone better for Monster Energy-backed snowmobilers Tucker Hibbert and Chris Burandt this past weekend at the 11th annual ESPN Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado.
Hibbert, the on again/off again snowmobile racer trapped in a professional motocross racer's body, won his second gold medal in the world's premier snocross event, this past Saturday winning Winter X in convincing fashion aboard his equally mean green and black Artic Cat sled emblazoned with the iconic Monster Energy M-claw logo.
"All week we've been real confident in our machines, but I can't say enough about my team," said Hibbert, who also won the Snocross gold in 2000 at 15 years of age. "They put together an awesome sled for me. I just went out there and held the gas wide open on the start and it came out good."
Hibbert made the main event by dominating his qualifier. But the real excitement would come at the end of the 18-lap main event - the longest in X Games history. There the Monster Energy-backed Hibbert would nearly run out of gas, coasting through the checkers on vapors and stalling his sled near the podium.
"Looking forward to a long 18-lap race, we took a lot of measurements throughout practice to figure out how many laps we could go and how much fuel we'd burn," explained Hibbert. "Ultimately, we want to have the least amount of fuel left in the sled at the end of the race so we can save weight and get to the first corner faster. So hat's off to my mechanics because they did the perfect calculation. Another half lap and we would've been done."
Monster Energy's Hibbert burst onto the Winter X snocross scene in 2000, winning the gold medal as a first-time teenage Winter X competitor. Since then Hibbert has followed up with four more X Games medals in snocross (2002, '03, '04 and '05) - bringing his haul to a total of five Winter X medals. Noteworthy: When not racing WSA snocross events, Hibbert lives in Mississippi and trains for supercross with moto-great Kevin Windham.
Monster Energy's Chris Burandt, a Colorado local, was also the talk of the snowmobile community when the world's most renown backwoods and mountain free rider took it to the competition in the inaugural Snowmobile Freestyle event, winning the gold with a combination of freestyle motocross-inspired tricks - including a couple unbelievable 100-foot back flips - on his 400-plus pound snowmobile.
""This is our time, right here. This is our time to shine and show people what we're made of and why we belong here," said Burandt, who will star in 2007 on the Monster Energy Slednecks Invasion Tour with world snowmobile distance jumping record holder Paul Thacker. "And that's why you're seeing people pushing the limit." Note: Burandt was a three-time competitor in Winter X's old "Hillcross" event (cancelled in '04 in favor of Snocross).
Next up for Hibbert will be some more WSA Snocross races, followed by the Eastern Region AMA Supercross Lites opener in Atlanta (Feb.
24th). Burandt will be doing some Slednecks No. 10 video shooting, along with getting prepared for the '07 Monster Energy/Slednecks Invasion Tour.

Monster Energy Signs MotoGP Racer John Hopkins
"Hopper" will compliment Monster Energy's existing stable of elite road racers
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 22, 2007) - News out of Monster Energy headquarters today was that the company has just signed California- born MotoGP racer John Hopkins to a sponsorship deal that will have him running the iconic Monster Energy logo on the No. 21 Rizzla Suzuki GP bike, effective immediately. Monster Energy is looking for a worldwide reach via the sponsorship of Hopkins.
Hopkins, who finished 10th overall in the GPs last year, will be racing the new 800cc Suzuki GVSR - a bike that he just yesterday set the fastest test time on during the first day of MotoGP testing at the Sepang course in Malaysia.
"Monster Energy and I are going to be an excellent fit on the GP tour," said Hopkins. "It'll be cool having Monster Energy aboard with us for the GP season, beginning this week with testing at Sepang."
Hopkins' racing career has spanned several decades, beginning with motocross and dirt track in southern California and leading up to the ultimate in road racing - a Suzuki MotoGP factory ride in 2003. In between that time Hopkins laid down some amazing lines here in the States racing on the AMA Superbike tour.
In 1999, following the passing of his father, himself a former Isle of Man TT racer, Hopkins was picked up by the Valvoline EMGO Suzuki program where the then teenager won the AMA Formula Xtreme title in 2001. Hopkins used that title as a springboard to the GPs and has raced the global circuit ever since.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto Victorious @ Second Anaheim SX Round
Villopoto takes over AMA Supercross Lites class points lead, teammates Chris Gosselaar finishes fifth, Christophe Pourcel retires from race
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 22, 2007)
2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series tour.
Villpoto took the series lead back from his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammate, Christophe Pourcel. The upstart French great had won his heat race and all signs pointed to another great showdown between the two hyper-fast teenagers
Running well in addition to Villopoto was Chris Gosselaar, who finished 5th overall in the Lites main event and is in third place overall in the WSX standings
Villopoto got his night going with a convincing 14-plus second win in the second heat race over Josh Hansen. The Poulsbo, Wash., native then put the hammer down in the main event, getting out in second place after the first lap, then taking the lead for good over Steve Boniface on lap two.
"It was a good night," said Villopoto. "I had a couple bad starts, in my heat and the main, but once I got passed a few guys up front (in the main) I had a clear track."
As it stands Villopoto has a comfortable lead (72-55) over 2nd place Lawrence for the overall AMA Western Region Lites class lead.
Gosselaar is in 3rd overall with 49 points.
Next up for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team is Round Four of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series at San Francisco’s SBC Park (Jan. 27th). Last year at San Francisco Villopoto finished a disappointing 6th overall in the muddy event.
"I made some stupid mistakes up there in San Francisco," said Villopoto. "Hopefully I’ll learn from those mistakes."

Monster Energy’s Ricky Carmichael Works The CBS Sports Booth As Anaheim 2 SX Commentator!
Carmichael does a solid job lending race insight to series announcers Ralph Sheheen and longtime buddy and former SX champion Jeff Emig
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 22, 2007)
Carmichael, who joined series TV announcers Ralph Sheheen and Jeff Emig, returns to supercross series action as a racer this weekend at San Francisco’s SBC Park.
Said Carmichael on the experience: "That’s a tough job up there.
I’ve got to hand it to Jeff (Emig). It’s a lot more difficult than I thought it’d be."
Carmichael was able to lend a great deal of insight not only to the race, but regarding the heir apparent to his throne
"He’s definitely on fire."
"There’s not going to be any magical answers." (In terms of how Carmichael can stop Stewart.)
"45.9 second lap…that’s rippin’."
Carmichael also gave props to another fellow Floridian and Monster Energy-backed racer, Tim Ferry, saying "Ferry’s really turned it around since his heat race."
Carmichael’s Monster Energy-backed Makita/Suzuki teammate Ivan Tedesco overcame a tenth-lap crash that bent his clutch lever under the bars to finish 8th overall in the Supercross class main event.
Tedesco ran well early in his heat race, finishing 2nd to Chad Reed.
In the main event he pulled a great start and was in third place after the first lap and was running in 4th through the middle portion of the race when the crash occurred.
Overall Tedesco sits in 9th place, only ten points out of the top five behind Carmichael.
Both Carmichael and Tedesco return to action this weekend at San Francisco’s SBC Park (Jan. 27th) for Round Four of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series. Last year Carmichael finishes 2nd to Stewart in the muddy contest at SBC Park, while Tedesco finished 16th.

Monster Energy & Slednecks Team Up For 2007 Tour
Dubbed "Monster Energy/Slednecks Invasion Tour," extreme powersports demo will feature snowmobiles, dirt bikes, big air & more!
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 22, 2007)
2007 Monster Energy/Slednecks Invasion Tour!
With venues and dates yet to be announced, the Monster Energy/ Slednecks Invasion Tour will showcase both snowmobile and motorcycle freestyle jumping, featuring the world distance snowmobile jumping record holder, Paul Thacker, and the world’s top all-around snowmobiler, Chris Burandt. Freestyle dirt bike jumpers and alternative music will round out the demo, geared towards the 13-34 age market.
"Slednecks is taking its backcountry and freestyle snowmobile revolution to mainstream demos," said John Keegan, founder of Slednecks. "The progression of the sport you see highlighted in our videos (Slednecks 1-9), the huge cliff jumps, gaps and freestyle maneuvers, will all be part of the Monster Energy/Slednecks Invasion Tour."
Cool thing about the tour, according to Keegan, is that it’ll run winter, summer, spring or fall. "We don’t have to have snow. We can show up and run it anywhere, anytime," said Keegan.
Added Monster Energy’s Mark Hall: "Although we’re in the early stages of planning I really like what I’m seeing. Freestyle on snowmobiles is insane and it’s something that’s been exclusive to areas with snow, and/or seen only in videos by many. We intend to change that with the Monster Energy/Slednecks Invasion Tour."
The Monster Energy/Slednecks Invasion Tour will consist of four events for 2007. For more information, including venues and dates, keep an eye on both

Carmichael pulls the holeshot in the re-start of the red-flagged main event and battles rival James Stewart (Monster / Kawasaki) in great race
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 15, 2007) – After a rare red-flagged main event due to a crash, Monster Energy-backed Ricky Carmichael (Makita/Suzuki) pulled the holeshot in the re-start and led the Phoenix round of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series, only to have another Monster Energy-backed racer, James Stewart, catch him and race to the eventual win.
Still, Carmichael was able to distance himself from a field of the world’s best supercross racers to finish second overall..
“We (RC & Stewart) had an awesome battle going, but he was just ruining me in that corner after the whoops,” said Carmichael. “I was happy to get out of here safe after doing my best.”
Referring to Stewart’s pass on him in the middle of lap eight, Carmichael and Stewart were taking two decidedly different lines through the whoop section. With virtually identical speed entering the whoops, Stewart was able to get a huge jump heading into the corner and the end whoop section and would eventually use that spot to set Carmichael up and pass him – though RC had Stewart covered on the remainder of the track up to that point.
The Phoenix event began with Carmichael setting a message to the rest of the field early, making the main event by virtue of a dominant performance in heat race No. 2. There Carmichael pulled the holeshot and never looked back, running away with a convincing win.
Carmichael’s Monster Energy-backed teammate Ivan Tedesco, still on the mend from an injured hand, finished a solid 7th on the evening in the premier AMA Supercross class. Tedesco’s evening was highlighted by a late race pass on supercross great Kevin Windham.

Christophe Pourcel, Ryan Villopoto and Chris Gosselaar go 1-2-3 in what’s believed to be the first-ever 125/Lite class team podium sweep
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 15, 2007) – Though supercross enthusiasts are still scouring the record books to possibly state otherwise, it’s believed that the Monster Energy-backed Pro Circuit/Kawasaki AMA Lites class team of Christophe Pourcel, Ryan Villopoto and Chris Gosselaar made AMA Supercross history on Saturday at Phoenix, becoming the first team to sweep a 125/Lites class podium in an AMA-sanctioned supercross event.
One thing’s for sure, though, they did make history becoming the first team since the 125 class was changed to Lites class and the field was made up entirely of four stroke bikes to sweep a podium.
Said Pro Circuit boss Mitch Payton: “It’s the first time ever that our team’s swept a supercross podium.”
Pourcel got things going early for Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki when he passed holeshot winner Martin Davalos on the first lap and put the hammer down, leading the 15-lap contest from start to finish. Villopoto, who got tied up in the first corner and started out in 10th place, put on a spirited and methodical charge to the front, but ran out of time in trying to catch leader Pourcel. Note: Villopoto’s fastest lap time (42.897) was 3/10ths of a second faster than Pourcel’s best lap time.
“I had the speed to win, but not enough laps to catch Christophe,” said Villopoto. “I’d like to congratulate him (Pourcel) on winning his first race here in the States, and also to Chris (Gosselaar) for making the podium as well. It was a great night for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team.”
For his part Gosselaar’s ride was equally as impressive as Villopoto’s. The Californian came all the way back from 13th place after the first lap to make the podium, finishing with a third-best lap time of 43.486 – which put him right in there with Pourcel and Villopoto.
“Mitch (Payton) was pretty happy with us,” said Gosselaar. “That was a pretty cool finish.”
As it stands Pourcel and Villopoto are tied for the overall AMA Western Region Lites class lead, each with 47 points. Gosselaar is tied for third overall with three other riders.
Next up for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team is Round Three of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series at Anaheim’s Angels Stadium (Jan. 20th).
